What a mild winter we are having. The higher elevation creeks are still a little cold and the fish lethargic, but who would want to go there when the low elevation browns are tearing up any and all streamers! Easily the best day of the year so far. The weather called for overcast with a chance of rain, but when I arrived at the stream it was mostly sunny and warm. It doesn’t get much better for February.

The brown trout have been cooperating very well throughout the winter, particularly this weekend. Other species are a bit lethargic, but not the browns. A couple nice 12-14″ fish while throwing predominantly streamers. The fish on this creek are consistently tarpon-esque in their jumps when hooked, more so than any other trout I’ve seen. Early afternoon a few bugs were coming off but no fish rising, so the streamer onslaught continued.

On an abnormally warm day in January, brown trout were chasing streamers as if it were late spring. In fact, it felt like late spring with temperatures hovering around 60°. Armed with a new video camera and eager to capture as much footage as possible, I set out to one of my favorite brown trout streams in Western North Carolina. This is my first trout fishing video, and first time editing a video. I’m looking forward to making many more.
